1. Go pro

Your flowers will feature in a great many of your wedding photos, so it really is worth investing in a professional and experienced florist to create the exact look you are dreaming of. Have a meeting with 2 or 3 florists and try not to be driven by price alone. Your priorities should be experience and reliability to ensure you are not disappointed on the day.

2. Make Pinterest your best friend

Think about what types of wedding bouquets you like so your florist can work with your vision. A Pinterest board is great for saving images and inspiration so you don’t forget anything you’ve spotted. Don’t forget to research your bridesmaid bouquets, flower girl posies and buttonholes as well as your wedding table centrepieces and venue designs. Carefully chosen accessories are a great way to tie in colours and themes and bring them all together.

3. Check where they are grown

To ensure the best quality and longevity, consider using only British flowers and source a florist who can ensure everything used is grown not flown.  The UK has a wealth of flowers available throughout the year so you certainly won’t be spoilt for choice. In the later summer months, beautiful seed heads and dried flowers lend extra texture and interest to wedding flowers.

4. Be kind to the environment

Protect the environment and ensure that your florist does not use floral foam, as it is a single use plastic and is very damaging to the environment. A good florist will be able to create much more natural and eco-friendly designs, so be sure to ask them about what processes and additional items they use.

5. Think logistics

Delivery of your wedding flowers will usually be on the day itself and you’ll want them as fresh as possible, so work closely with your florist to specify where and when you will need them. Be realistic about what can be achieved and find out who will be on hand to help at your venue, plus when your florist will be able to set up.

6. Get your florist to help

If you’re worried about everything going smoothly on the big day, delegate the task of setting up the flowers at the venue to your florist and ask them to discuss this with the wedding co-ordinator. They will be more than happy to help and will have done this all before for previous weddings.

7. Establish the budget

Provide a sensible budget for your wedding flowers that your florist will be able to work with. Remember that your wedding flowers will be carefully selected from the growers to give you the best choice and quality.  You can’t get champagne on a Prosecco budget so be realistic about what you want and what you can afford!
